Functional Testing Explained:
What It Is, How It Works, and Why It Could Change How You Feel
Have you been told your blood tests are normal, yet you still feel exhausted, bloated, hormonal, or just not yourself? You are not alone. And more importantly, "normal" on a standard blood test does not always mean optimal for you.
That is where functional testing comes in.
As a nutritional therapist, I use advanced laboratory tests to dig deeper into what is actually going on inside your body. Not to diagnose disease, but to understand the underlying imbalances that could be driving your symptoms. In this guide, I will walk you through everything you need to know, from what these tests actually look at, to how the results lead to real, meaningful change in how you feel.
What Is Functional Testing?
Think of functional testing as a detailed health MOT. Rather than simply checking whether something is clinically wrong, these tests look at how well your body is actually working day to day.
Your digestion, your hormones, your energy systems, your immune function, your nutrient levels. All of these things can be running below par without triggering anything alarming on a standard NHS blood test. Functional testing is designed to spot those gaps, so we can address them before they become bigger problems, and help you feel genuinely well rather than just "not ill."
How Is This Different from NHS Testing?
NHS testing is really important, and I always encourage clients to use it. But it has a specific purpose: to identify disease and rule out serious conditions. It is not designed to optimise how you feel.
There are a few key differences worth understanding.
"Normal" is not the same as optimal. NHS reference ranges are based on population averages. So if your result sits just inside the normal band, it gets flagged as fine, even if it is nowhere near where it needs to be for you to feel well. A good example is iron storage (ferritin). The NHS lower limit for women is very low, and many women told their levels are "normal" are still experiencing real fatigue, hair loss, and brain fog.
Standard tests do not look at everything. There are dozens of markers that simply are not checked on the NHS that can have a huge impact on your health. Things like gut bacteria balance, hormone metabolism, how your cells are producing energy, and key nutritional deficiencies.
Results need context. A number on its own does not tell the full story. Functional testing is always interpreted alongside your symptoms, your health history, and your lifestyle, so the results actually mean something.
What About Those Home Testing Kits?
At-home health tests have become really popular, and it is easy to see why. They are convenient, accessible, and feel empowering. But there are some important limitations to be aware of.
The quality varies a lot. Not all commercial kits use accredited laboratories, and the methods they use are not always the same as the clinical-grade tests I use in practice.
More importantly, data without context can be confusing at best, and misleading at worst. If a report tells you that your cortisol is low, or that you reacted to 47 foods, what do you actually do with that? Without expert interpretation, results can send you down unnecessary rabbit holes, cause anxiety, or lead to cutting out whole food groups without good reason.
Working with me means your results are read by someone who understands the full picture, can explain what they mean in plain English, and can turn them into a practical, personalised plan.
The Real Value: Expert Interpretation
This is where the magic really happens.
When your results come back, I do not just highlight the numbers that are out of range and hand you a supplement list. I look at patterns across the whole report, and I look at how those patterns relate to you specifically. Your symptoms, your history, your diet, your stress, your sleep.
I then explain everything to you in a way that makes sense, so you actually understand what is going on in your own body. That understanding is powerful. It makes it so much easier to commit to the changes that will make a difference.
From Results to Real Change: How It Actually Works
Understanding what is going on is only half the story. The other half is knowing what to do about it. This is where many people who test on their own get stuck, and it is where working with a nutritional therapist makes the biggest difference.
Here is how I turn your results into a practical plan.
We Prioritise
Your test might highlight several things worth addressing. But trying to fix everything at once is overwhelming and usually counterproductive. I identify what is most likely driving your symptoms and focus there first. Everything else gets phased in as you progress.
We Start With Food
Food is always the foundation. Based on your results, I will make specific recommendations about what to eat more of, what to ease back on, and whether a short-term therapeutic approach (like reducing certain fermentable foods for gut issues, or an anti-inflammatory eating pattern) would be helpful.
We Add Supplements Where They Are Needed
When food alone is not enough, I recommend high-quality, practitioner-grade supplements at doses that are actually going to make a difference. This is not the same as picking something off the shelf at the health food shop. The type, form, and dose of a supplement matters enormously. For example, there are many forms of magnesium, and the right one depends entirely on what you are trying to address.
We Look at the Bigger Picture
Often, test results point to lifestyle factors as well. Sleep, stress, movement, and daily habits all show up in the biochemistry. I will give you targeted, realistic strategies in these areas too, nothing overwhelming, just the things most likely to move the needle for you.
We Review and Adjust
After an agreed period, we retest the relevant markers to see how you have responded. This is important. It means your programme is always based on evidence, not guesswork, and we can refine things as your health improves.z
The Tests I Use and What They Can Tell Us
GI Effects Comprehensive Stool Test
This is one of the most detailed gut health tests available. Using a stool sample, it gives us a full picture of what is living in your gut, how well you are digesting food, whether there is any inflammation in your digestive system, and how your gut immune system is functioning.
It can identify things like imbalances in your gut bacteria, the presence of unwanted pathogens, and markers that indicate a gut lining that needs support. This is particularly useful for anyone dealing with IBS, bloating, unpredictable digestion, skin conditions, recurring infections, or low mood, because gut health has a direct and well-researched connection to all of these.
Metabolomix (Nutritional and Metabolic Testing)
This test goes much further than a standard vitamin and mineral blood panel. Using a urine sample, it looks at how well your body is actually converting nutrients and producing energy at a cellular level. It can reveal deficiencies or functional imbalances that would not show up on a routine blood test, including issues with amino acids (the building blocks from protein), fatty acid balance, antioxidant levels, and how efficiently your cells are generating energy.
It is particularly useful for understanding the root of fatigue, brain fog, low mood, poor recovery after exercise, or that persistent feeling of running on empty.
Hormonal Health Testing (DUTCH Test)
Hormones are a common concern for many of my clients, and standard blood tests often only tell part of the story. The DUTCH test uses dried urine samples collected at specific points throughout the day to give a comprehensive picture of your sex hormones and how your body is breaking them down, your stress hormone (cortisol) patterns, melatonin, and more.
This depth of information is really valuable because it is not just about how much of a hormone you have, but how your body is processing and clearing it. Two people with identical hormone levels can have very different experiences depending on this. This test helps me support clients with PMS, PCOS, perimenopause, menopause, disrupted sleep, anxiety, fatigue, and fertility.
Nutrigenomics by Lifecode GX
Your genes influence everything from how you absorb certain nutrients to how your body handles stress, detoxification, and inflammation. Nutrigenomics testing looks at specific genetic variations that affect these processes and helps us understand where you might always need a little extra support.
This is a one-off test because your DNA does not change. But the insights are lifelong. For example, some people carry a gene variation that affects how they process folate. Knowing this means I can recommend the right form of that nutrient, which makes a significant practical difference. It allows us to be truly personalised in how we support your health for the long term.
Food Intolerance Testing (IgG Testing)
Unlike a food allergy, which causes an immediate reaction you would know about, food intolerances often work in a delayed, low-grade way. Symptoms can appear hours or even a couple of days after eating the trigger food, making them almost impossible to identify through trial and error alone.
IgG food intolerance testing can help identify foods that may be contributing to chronic bloating, skin flare-ups, joint discomfort, headaches, or fatigue. That said, a positive result does not necessarily mean you need to avoid that food forever. Elevated reactions often reflect an unsettled gut rather than a permanent sensitivity, and as gut health improves, food tolerance frequently does too. I use these results as part of a carefully guided, structured approach rather than handing you a long list of things to avoid.
Who Can Benefit from Functional Testing?
Functional testing can be valuable for a wide range of people and health concerns. It is particularly worth considering if you have been told your results are normal but you still do not feel well, if you have several symptoms that seem unconnected, or if you simply want to take a more proactive, informed approach to your health.
Some of the areas I most commonly support with functional testing include:
Gut and digestive health including IBS, bloating, constipation, diarrhoea, acid reflux, and suspected bacterial imbalances.
Hormonal health including PMS, PCOS, endometriosis, perimenopause, menopause, acne, and fertility support.
Energy and fatigue including burnout, chronic fatigue, long COVID recovery, and that wired-but-tired feeling that so many people know well.
Mood and mental clarity including anxiety, low mood, brain fog, and difficulty concentrating. Gut health and nutritional status play a much bigger role here than most people realise.
Immune health including frequent illness, slow recovery, and autoimmune conditions.
Skin conditions including eczema, psoriasis, acne, and rosacea, which are often rooted in gut health or nutritional imbalances.
Weight and metabolism when the usual approaches are not working and there may be underlying factors like blood sugar issues, thyroid function, or hormonal imbalances to consider.
Cardiovascular health including elevated cholesterol and metabolic concerns, supported through nutrition and lifestyle alongside your GP care.
Do You Need Testing to Work With Me?
Not at all. Plenty of clients make fantastic progress through dietary and lifestyle changes alone, based on a thorough initial consultation. Testing becomes most useful when symptoms are complex or longstanding, when we want to add a layer of precision and certainty to your programme, or when you want a clear baseline to measure your progress against.
I always discuss the reasoning behind any test I suggest, and I will never recommend something unless I genuinely think it will add value for you. Costs vary depending on the complexity of the panel, and I am happy to talk through the options during a discovery call.
Ready to Find Out What Is Really Going On?
If you are tired of feeling tired, of being told everything is fine when you know it is not, or of throwing things at the wall and hoping something sticks, functional testing could be the clarity you have been looking for.
The best place to start is a conversation. Book a free discovery call and we can talk through your health history, what you are experiencing, and whether testing is likely to be a useful part of your journey.
This blog is for educational purposes. Functional testing and nutritional therapy complement rather than replace medical care. Please always speak with your GP about any health concerns.
